Magnetometer

With help of a magnetometer, one can detect magnetic field or magnetic dipole moment, which can play an important role in navigation, industrial metrology, or even human health monitoring. Optical pumped magnetometer (OPM) utilizes the optical property changes induced by the magnetic field for detection. Since OPM is a contactless measurement method that can operate under room temperature, it has some obvious advantages in comparison with other methods.

One of the emerging application directions of such magnetometer is non-invasive functional brain-imaging system. By sensing the electro-magnetic fields generated by neuronal current sources in the cerebral cortex, OPM provides an easy solution for high-resolution-brain imaging, Optical pumped magnetometer wins over the traditional SQUID solution since it doesn’t require ultra-low temperature. The miniaturization of OPM sensors allows the increase of sensing channels and flexible sensor distribution.

The matching tapered amplifiers can help to increase the output power to W level, which can further help to improve the sensitivity of the OPM. The small form factor of a semiconductor laser diode is key for miniaturization.
