Product: 760 nm DFB laser diode

TOPTICA EAGLEYARD’s DFB 760 nm laser diode in butterfly package with fiber is optimized for accurate oxygen detection. With narrow linewidth, mode-hop free tunability and stable wavelength control, it ensures precise transmission measurements directly linked to gas concentration.

In this case, however, the laser is used to control an FTIR spectrometer. Its stable spectral properties enable also very precise interferometric measurements, as described in this application insight.

In which applications do you use EAGLEYARD’s laser diode?

OHB: „The laser is used onboard the International Space Station (ISS) inside the ANITA-2 trace gas analyzer monitoring the cabin air and therefore ensures a good air quality for the astronauts.”

Can you give some insights on how your product works and what role EAGLEYARD’s laser plays?

OHB: “The ANITA-2 trace gas analyzer is monitoring the cabin air onboard the International Space Station since beginning of 2022. It consists of a Fourier Transform Spectrometer which measures absorption lines in a gas cell in the infrared spectral range, from which the concentrations of currently 48 gases are derived. These include gases that are expected to be part of the cabin air such as Carbon Dioxide, Methan and other hydrocarbons, but also gases such as the toxic Carbon Monoxide or ammonia, or other gases e.g. from cooling systems and other experiments onboard the ISS. A key feature is here, that also unexpected gases can be detected, and implemented into the instrument’s gas list.

One key element for measuring the spectra at the required high accuracy is the Fourier Transform Spectrometer, in which moving mirrors lead to interference effects of the probing IR-radiation. This mirror movement needs to be both performed and monitored extremely accurately, so that the interferometer signal is recorded at the target mirror positions: the deviation must not exceed a few nm. To achieve this high accuracy, the 760 nm laser from EAGLEYARD comes to play. When operating at precise conditions, it emits a highly stable and narrowband wavelength, which is used to interferometrically measure the mirror positions. Since start of operation onboard the ISS, no failures or unexpected behaviors were detected, and the Laser has proven to operate very reliable. Thanks to this, the initially intended mission duration of the instrument of one year was continuously extended such that today (2026), the instrument is still operating and expected to operate for several more years. A second ANITA instrument was recently contracted to be built, to ensure continuous atmospheric monitoring on-board the ISS. Also, an ANITA instrument is one of the most likely candidates of cabin air monitoring systems for further space exploration missions, e.g. around or on the Moon. Due to the good experiences onboard the ISS, for these instruments again EAGLEYARD Lasers are foreseen, contributing to a healthy environment at these far outposts of humanity.”

If you have used a different laser diode component before using the one from EAGLEYARD in your product, what was your motivation to switch?

OHB : “No other diode laser was used before.”

Can you share insights on the decision-making process towards EAGLEYARD’s laser diode component?

OHB: “The EAGLEYARD lasers showed the required spectral and performance characteristics for our application. In addition, significant space heritage exists at EAGLEYARD.”

How did you experience the collaboration with EAGLEYARD from the first request until the whole order was built into your product?

OHB:“We always experienced very supportive information exchanges with EAGLEYARD, helping us a lot in realizing our instrument.”

What is the advantage of using the selected EAGLEYARD laser diode component compared to alternatives/prior solutions?

OHB: “In many laboratory FTIR spectrometers, HeNe Lasers are used. Due to the large volume as well as due to the high voltage required, a switch to a semiconductor laser was performed.”

How satisfied are you with EAGLEYARD in total?

OHB: “We are very satisfied and can recommend EAGLEYARD.”

We thank OHB SE for these great insights!
