The use of lasers in satellite communication systems has been growing in popularity due to their high data rates and low latency. Lasers diodes in particular offer many advantages over traditional radio frequency communication systems, such as high bandwidth capabilities and low power consumption.

For intra-satellite communication, the 850 nm laser diode is one of the most commonly used diode lasers. This wavelength is widely used in fiber optic communication systems and is well-suited for communication within a small satellite, as it helps reduce size, weight, and costs.

For inter-satellite communication, the 1064 nm wavelength is popularly used in free-space optical communication systems. This wavelength offers advantages such as longer transmission distances and less atmospheric interference, making it ideal for long-range communication between satellites.

The use of a beacon laser allows the satellite to acquire the location of the target in order to establish the laser communication. 808 nm single mode laser with an output power of up to 800 mW provide the needed beam characteristic for such beacon lasers.
